Iran is the biggest producer of Berberis vulgaris (barberry) fruit in the world, with 11,000 hectares of land under cultivation. Over 10,000 tons of dried barberry    fruit are produced in Iran per year. Among the provinces of Iran, Southern Khorasan is one of the biggest producers of Berberis vulgaris. Medicine properties

There are many valuable compounds in this plant. The amount of alkaloids in the roots of barberry is more than the other parts. According to traditional medicine, Berberis vulgaris is used to treat fever, cough, liver disease, depression, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia and bleeding.

Kinds of Barberry

The difference between Barberries is in drying process. There are two type which called Pofaki (puffy) and Dane anari


Sun dried Type (Dane Anari) Drying

Pomegranate barberries (traditional)

In order to produce the sun dried type of Barberries, the fruits are taken off of the branches and placed under direct sunlight to dry. The drying process normally takes 4 weeks.


In order to produce the puffy type of Barberries, the branches of the plant is being cut off with the fruit on it and then it will be places on wooden bars in a place with continuous air stream from 4 sides.

The drying process normally takes 4 to 5 months.

After the Barberries are dried they are being separated from the branches by a machine and then passed through a vacuum machine to remove foreign objects.
